TULSA, Oklahoma -There will be more school choices for Tulsa parents next fall. Tulsa Public Schools approved plans for three new charter schools during a meeting Tuesday.
The schools will be part of Tulsa's public district and free for students. TPS said it's excited about the additions because the charter schools will help fill a gap in some areas in need of a little extra education attention.
Nikhil Kawlra knows all about starting up a charter school, it's something he's already done once in Philadelphia.
TULSA, Oklahoma -Tulsa is getting three new charter schools. Tulsa Public Schools approved the plans Tuesday night to launch the schools next fall.
College Bound Academy would begin with almost 100 kindergartners. The district would like to eventually expand the program into a Kindergarten through 4th grade charter school in East Tulsa.
The proposed Academic Enterprise Zone would include the following elementary schools: Columbus, Cooper, Disney, ECDE-Reed, Kerr, Lewis & Clark, Lindbergh, Peary, and Skelly.
The Tulsa school board gave it’s unanimous approval on Tuesday for each of three newly proposed charter schools to open in fall 2015.
College Bound Academy Charter School and Tulsa Honor Academy will be located in east Tulsa, while Collegiate Hall Charter School will be near 61st Street and Peoria Avenue.
All three of the proposed school operators have been trained and are being supported by a Boston-based national nonprofit corporation called Building Excellent Schools, or BES.
Superintendent Keith Ballard is recommending Tulsa Public Schools partner with three new charter school operators.
All three of the proposed school operators have been trained and are being supported by a Boston-based national nonprofit corporation called Building Excellent Schools, or BES. If approved, the new schools would open in 2015-16 — with two to be located in east Tulsa and one near 61st Street and Peoria Avenue.
“In an urban setting, there have to be choice offerings for parents and students,” Ballard said. “I have worked diligently to repair our relationships with our existing charter school partners. I do not want us to be overrun by charters, but charter partners who also view themselves as public school advocates and who have a laser-like focus in certain areas can be helpful to the cause.”
